Meet Shawnie! Postpartum Doula

postpartum support washington dc

Hi, my name is Shawniqua, but everyone calls me “Shawnie.” I have been supporting families as a Birth and Postpartum Doula for the past eight years. I completed my doula training through Childbirth International, and since becoming certified, I have had the honor of working with numerous families as they welcomed their babies and transitioned into early parenthood.

As a birth doula, I provide continuous emotional, physical, and informational support throughout pregnancy and labor. I believe birth is a transformative experience, and I am deeply committed to helping families feel confident, informed, and empowered in their choices. I support clients by helping them understand their options, practice comfort measures, prepare partners for active involvement, and create a calm, grounded environment during labor. My goal is to ensure you feel heard, supported, and cared for every step of the way.

In the postpartum period, I assist families during those tender first weeks and months, offering reassurance, education, and hands-on support as they adjust to life with a newborn. I truly enjoy educating parents in the ever-evolving world of newborn care and am always eager to learn new skills to ensure my practices remain current and evidence-based. In March 2022, I advanced my training by completing the Newborn Care Specialist course through the Newborn Care Training Academy. I pursued this specialization because of my deep love for children and my passion for supporting mothers and families during their postpartum journey.

I understand that inviting someone into your birth and postpartum space requires immense trust. I consider that trust a gift. I find overnight care especially rewarding, knowing that I have helped new parents get the rest they need to recover and feel more confident in their parenting.

In addition to caring for both parent and baby, I am available to assist with breast and bottle feeding support, soothing techniques, establishing healthy sleep foundations, light housekeeping related to baby care, and nursery organization.

I pride myself on being self-motivated, hardworking, and communicative, with a calm and enthusiastic presence. In my downtime, I love spending time with my family and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
