Frequently Asked Questions

What does a postpartum doula do?
A postpartum doula provides nonmedical, in-home support after your baby arrives. Care may include newborn soothing, feeding support, parent recovery, light meal preparation, baby laundry, bottle and pump-part washing, sibling adjustment, education, emotional reassurance, and referrals to trusted professionals when needed.

What is the difference between daytime and overnight support?
Daytime support focuses on helping your family recover, adjust, and build confidence. Your doula may assist with newborn care, feeding, meals, baby-related household tasks, and education while giving you time to rest or attend appointments. Overnight support prioritizes restorative sleep while your doula handles newborn care between feedings.

What happens during an overnight shift?
Your doula may handle diapering, burping, soothing, settling, bottle-feeding according to your plan, washing feeding supplies, and tracking your baby’s night. If you are nursing, your doula can bring the baby to you and then handle the remaining care so you can return to sleep.

Do you provide sleep training?
We offer gentle, developmentally appropriate support for establishing healthy newborn rhythms. We do not use rigid sleep-training methods with newborns. If your family needs more specialized assistance later, we can connect you with an infant sleep consultant.

Can you help with breastfeeding or bottle-feeding?
Yes. Our doulas can provide general support for breast, chest, bottle, pumping, and combination feeding. When clinical feeding assistance is needed, we can provide a referral to an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.

Can a postpartum doula care for my baby while I sleep or leave the house?
Yes. Depending on your family’s plan and comfort level, your doula can care for your baby while you sleep, shower, attend an appointment, spend time with an older child, or take a much-needed break.

Do you support twins and multiples?
Yes. We have doulas experienced in supporting twins and multiples, including overlapping feeding schedules, soothing, sleep routines, bottle preparation, and helping parents create manageable systems.

How long are postpartum shifts?
Daytime shifts have a four-hour minimum. Overnight shifts have an eight-hour minimum, with 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. being a common schedule. Longer shifts and customized schedules may be available.

How many days or nights can we schedule?
Support may be scheduled from one to seven days or nights per week, depending on your needs and our team’s availability. We can create a plan for occasional help, several weeks of consistent care, or more comprehensive daytime and overnight support.

When should we reserve postpartum support?
We recommend reaching out during pregnancy, especially if you would like regular overnight care or support on several days each week. However, we also welcome inquiries after your baby arrives and will do our best to accommodate immediate needs.

Will we have the same doula for every shift?
We prioritize consistency whenever possible. Depending on the number of shifts requested, your location, scheduling needs, and doula availability, your care may be provided by one doula or a small, carefully coordinated team. A specific doula cannot be guaranteed.

How are doulas selected for our family?
We consider your location, preferred schedule, type of support, family needs, and any special experience you request. We then introduce you to an available doula—or team of doulas—who appears to be a strong fit.

Are your postpartum doulas trained and screened?
Our team members provide documentation related to their training, infant CPR or BLS certification, professional liability insurance, background checks, experience, and areas of specialization.

What happens if our scheduled doula becomes unavailable?
Because Balanced Birth Support is a team, we can work to arrange qualified backup support when illness, emergencies, or unexpected circumstances prevent your scheduled doula from attending.

Do you provide medical care?
No. Postpartum doulas are nonmedical support professionals and do not diagnose conditions, prescribe treatment, perform clinical procedures, or replace your medical provider. We can help you identify concerns and connect you with an appropriate healthcare professional.

Do you accept insurance or employer fertility benefits?
Some families use employer-sponsored fertility benefits, reimbursement programs, HSA or FSA funds, or other eligible benefits for postpartum doula care. Coverage varies, so we recommend confirming your specific requirements directly with your plan administrator. We can provide supporting documentation or superbills when applicable.

What is your cancellation policy?
We require at least 24 hours’ notice when canceling or changing a scheduled shift. Additional details will be included in your service agreement.

Do I have to schedule a consultation call?
No. You can complete our postpartum inquiry form to receive a personalized quote without scheduling a call. If you would prefer to talk through your options, you are also welcome to schedule a consultation.

How is my personalized quote created?
Your quote is based on your location, preferred daytime or overnight schedule, shift length, estimated number of weeks, number of babies, anticipated start date, and your family’s specific support needs.

How do we get started?
Complete our postpartum inquiry form and tell us about your family, location, schedule, and support needs. We will review your information, prepare a personalized quote, and explain the next steps for reserving care.
