Meet Demi!

I am excited that you are beginning this transformative journey and finding your own way. Whatever path you so choose as a parent, I would be honored to support you as your family blossoms.

My journey into birth and postpartum work began with the pregnancy of my first daughter in 2015. I was 19, I knew nothing about modern prenatal, birth and postpartum care. Plus, in terms of newborns let’s just say I couldn’t have differentiated between rooting cues or gas. I was new to all things parenting, but I wanted to get it right and give my baby the best start possible. As I began building my library of new found pregnancy and infant books, I stumbled across what would change my focus and life forever. I found Ina May Gaskin and her book, The Guide to Childbirth. I immediately began researching all things Ina May, which naturally led to hypnobirthing, natural childbirth classes, breastfeeding, La Leche League. I was immersed and in love. Something about all of these topics felt right for me. My path as a mother was set. We went on to have our first daughter at a birth center in North Carolina where I was able to implement all I had learned in my prenatal studying / preparation and successfully have the non-medicated birth I so desired. We went on to breastfeed for 3.5 years after that. Our second daughter we decided to have at home in 2018 and I am proud to now be tandem nursing my two beautiful little girls.

The most profound part of my birth experiences were creating the team of professionals around me who would support my choices and work, themselves, to make my goals happen. I could not have had the births I did without preparing myself, knowing my options, making informed choices, and having a supportive team around me through my pregnancy and births. These empowering experiences shaped me and I knew I had to work to ensure all mothers were given the opportunity to have the birth and postpartum experiences they so desire. We are not all going to seek the same route, but we should all be respected and given the evidence-based information to make the right decisions for ourselves and our babies. We all deserve a supportive, unbiased, advocate who will be an integral part of our team as we make this momentous shift into parenthood. That is why I decided to become a doula.

I first became a student pursuing my IBCLC (International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants) in 2015. I will completing my studies in 2020 and sitting for the certification. While studying for my IBCLC I undertook an immersive lactation program through Lactation Education Resources which is one of the leading Lactation Education Organizations in the country and it actually began here in the DMV area. I obtained their Certified Breastfeeding Specialist Certification in 2017. Around the same time I trained as a La Leche League Leader and you will now find me leading the meetings with the La Leche League of Old Town Alexandria group. Next, I trained and became certified as a Postpartum Doula through DONA (Doulas of Northern America) and a Maternal Support Practitioner with a focus on Birth Doula Support through Bebo Mia. I am excited that you are beginning this transformative journey and finding your own way. Whatever path you so choose as a parent, I would be honored to support you as your family blossoms. I would work diligently by your side to ensure you are supported, heard, comforted and reassured of your power and respected as a parent. I wish nothing but blessings to your family during this time!

I do this work because nothing else compares to watching a woman move mountains with her own self.
