Elizabeth Oldham | Founder, Birth & Postpartum Doula and Childbirth Educator

Elizabeth “Liz” Oldham is the Founder and CEO of Balanced Birth Support, the largest full-service doula group serving the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. She is an experienced birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator, placenta encapsulation specialist, and dedicated advocate for informed, family-centered maternity care.

Liz discovered doula support while preparing for the birth of her second child nearly two decades ago. She was immediately inspired by the difference compassionate, continuous support could make during such a life-changing experience. That discovery led her to leave the administrative side of the hospital setting and pursue professional training in birth doula care, postpartum support, and childbirth education—ultimately laying the foundation for Balanced Birth Support.

Since then, Liz has personally supported more than 600 families through pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum transition. Her experience includes high-risk births, cesarean births, VBACs, multiples, pregnancy loss, and families navigating mental health concerns. She is supportive and affirming of all families, birth settings, and informed birthing choices.

Liz holds a Bachelor of Science in Business and Economics from East Carolina University and has completed extensive professional training through DONA, Madriella, HypnoBirthing, HypnoBabies, Spinning Babies, IPPA, and other respected birth-work educators. Her specialized education includes Rebozo techniques, Spinning Babies techniques, high-risk labor support, pregnancy-loss support, inclusivity and equity, negotiation, childbirth education, and placenta encapsulation.

Combining her business background with her passion for birth work, Liz grew Balanced Birth Support from an independent doula practice into a collaborative team of approximately 50 birth and postpartum professionals. The agency now connects families with experienced birth doulas, postpartum doulas, newborn care specialists, infant sleep consultants, childbirth educators, lactation professionals, and placenta specialists.

From the beginning, Liz’s vision has extended beyond supporting individual families. She is equally passionate about helping doulas build sustainable careers, strengthening professional standards, and creating a collaborative care model that gives families access to reliable, continuous support.

Liz believes that birth is not simply about the arrival of a baby—it is a powerful, life-changing experience that families carry with them forever. Her approach centers on calm, seamless, and unbiased physical and emotional support that helps families understand their options, find their voices, and feel confident advocating for their needs.

As a mother of four, Liz understands that every pregnancy, birth, baby, and family is different. She believes all families deserve to feel respected, represented, informed, and supported, regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, family structure, socioeconomic background, or how their birth unfolds.

Through Balanced Birth Support, Liz has created more than a doula agency. She has built a trusted community where families can receive professional, compassionate support from pregnancy through birth and the fourth trimester—and where they are always welcomed exactly as they are.
