Tamoyia Ragsdale
As a young girl, I discovered my passion for birth when, at just five years old, I began guiding my dolls through pretend labor. Although I was too young to fully understand it then, I felt a spiritual calling to support women through the profound transformation of birth.
As I grew older, I became captivated by the strength and beauty of pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum experience. The journey of carrying, protecting, and nourishing a baby in the womb—and then bringing that new life into the world—filled me with awe.
I imagined myself standing alongside ancestors and loved ones, witnessing the fulfillment of prayers, dreams, and manifestations as each new life entered the world. What followed birth felt equally miraculous: watching a birthing person transform into a more powerful, loving, and intuitive version of themselves. To me, it is a true love story—one in which parents and babies choose each other.
Over the years, dreams began visiting me. In them, women from all walks of life were giving birth, and I was there holding their hands, offering comfort, and surrendering myself to their needs in a way understood by the generations of women who came before me. Those dreams continued until I finally answered their call.
After becoming a certified birth and postpartum doula, I had the honor of standing beside more than 100 families. In those sacred spaces, I have become a sister, an aunt, a mother figure, and a steady source of support for those who needed me.
I have wiped away tears of uncertainty, celebrated breastfeeding breakthroughs, and watched parents transform from doubtful and overwhelmed to confident, capable, and deeply connected to their own intuition.
I do not believe I possess a special power. Instead, I hold the flashlight while parents navigate their journey and uncover the strength that has been within them all along.
The extensions of me: I am a mother to three remarkable children who have brought immeasurable meaning to my life.
My oldest is a deeply nurturing soul—the apple did not fall far from the tree. She is a revolutionary who stands against injustice, and when she speaks, she moves the earth.
My son has mastered the art of slowing me down and reminding me to feel. He challenges me to think bigger and look beyond the obvious. He reminds me that nothing is impossible—if you can imagine it, you can create it; if you can dream it, it already exists.
My youngest is a natural-born leader. Her Ghanaian uncle lovingly calls her “The Queen Mother.” She chases the wind, climbs trees, jumps in puddles, and finds joy in the earth. She gardens and proudly serves as a little mama to our chickens and ducks.
Each of my children has shaped who I am as a mother, a woman, and a doula. They continually remind me to lead with courage, remain present, dream without limits, and stay connected to the natural world.
A few of my favorite things: the roar of the ocean, the sound of barred owls at night, a good binge-worthy show, deep belly laughs, and friends who do not take life too seriously.
