Meet Tonya! Birth & Postpartum Doula

Like many before me, I came to this work because of my path to motherhood which included a few challenges like divorce, medical delays, and fertility treatments (both IUI and IVF). Since I was of “advanced maternal age,” I wanted the support of a doula who would see me as an individual and not a statistic. I felt empowered during my birth experience thanks to the knowledge, resources, and support my doula provided me, which is what I hope to offer to you.

My undergraduate degree is in Psychology and I have been working in law since graduating college. I have officially been doing this work since October 2022; however, unbeknownst to me at the time, I was unofficially supporting friends and family during their births. Maybe this is when the doula bug was planted! I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing birthing people step into their power, advocate for themselves, and transition into parenthood right in front of my eyes. This is probably why I have cried at every birth thus far. However, postpartum is where I thrive! I have found that families prepare for birth but seldom do so for postpartum. It is where things fall apart and I would love to step in to provide an extra pair of hands, validation, support, and resources.

Fun facts about me: I am from the Caribbean, had two extra wisdom teeth extracted, love to travel & experience new adventures, enjoy museums (I can spend DAYS in one), and have been called a daredevil by friends.

Principles important to me: diversity, awareness of biases against black mothers, and inclusion of LGBTQ+ people.

Things I’m working on: decreasing my Starbucks habit, patience during these toddler years, taking more time for myself, and connecting with friends on a regular basis.
